MedPoint Telemedicine
A HIPAA-compliant telemedicine platform connecting patients with specialists via video consultations, with integrated EHR and prescription management.
Client: MedPoint
About the Project
MedPoint is a telemedicine platform that connects patients with medical specialists through secure video consultations. The system includes electronic health records (EHR), e-prescriptions, appointment scheduling, and insurance claim processing.
Challenge
The client needed a platform that met strict healthcare data regulations (HIPAA compliance) while providing a seamless user experience comparable to consumer apps. The system had to support concurrent video consultations at scale, integrate with existing hospital EHR systems via HL7 FHIR, and handle sensitive patient data with end-to-end encryption.
Key requirements:
- HIPAA-compliant data storage and transmission
- Low-latency video consultations with screen sharing and file exchange
- Integration with hospital EHR systems via HL7 FHIR
- E-prescription workflow with pharmacy network integration
- Multi-role access: patients, doctors, admins, insurance coordinators
Solution
We built the platform on Laravel (backend API) with Vue.js (SPA frontend). Video consultations use WebRTC with a custom TURN/STUN server setup for reliable connectivity. The entire infrastructure runs on Docker with automated deployment pipelines.
Architecture
- Laravel API with strict role-based access control, audit logging, and HIPAA-compliant data handling
- Vue.js SPA with responsive design optimized for both desktop and mobile browsers
- WebRTC for peer-to-peer video with fallback through TURN servers for restrictive networks
- PostgreSQL with encrypted columns for PHI (Protected Health Information) and comprehensive backup policies
- Docker orchestration with health checks, auto-scaling, and zero-downtime deployments
Key Features
- Video consultation room with waiting area, screen sharing, and secure document exchange during calls
- Electronic health records with structured visit notes, diagnosis coding (ICD-10), and lab result integration
- Automated appointment scheduling with doctor availability management and patient reminders
- E-prescription system integrated with a network of 2,000+ pharmacies
- Insurance claim submission and tracking dashboard for administrative staff
Result
The platform facilitated over 80,000 video consultations in its first year, with an average patient satisfaction rating of 4.7/5. More than 1,200 doctors across 15 specialties are active on the platform. The average wait time from booking to consultation dropped from 3 days (in-person) to 4 hours (telemedicine). The system maintained full HIPAA compliance through two independent security audits.

FAQ
What technology stack was used to build the MedPoint telemedicine platform?
The backend API is built on Laravel with strict role-based access control and HIPAA-compliant data handling. The frontend is a Vue.js SPA optimized for both desktop and mobile browsers. Video consultations use WebRTC for peer-to-peer communication with fallback through TURN servers for restrictive networks. PostgreSQL stores patient data with encrypted columns for protected health information (PHI), and Docker orchestration handles deployment with health checks, auto-scaling, and zero-downtime releases.
What were the main technical challenges in developing the MedPoint platform?
Achieving HIPAA compliance across every layer of the stack — from encrypted data storage and transmission to audit logging and access controls — was the overarching challenge. Building reliable video consultations that work across varying network conditions required custom WebRTC configuration with adaptive bitrate and automatic TURN server fallback. Integrating with existing hospital EHR systems via HL7 FHIR presented interoperability challenges, as each hospital had different FHIR implementation profiles and data mapping requirements.
How long did it take to develop and launch MedPoint?
The core platform — video consultations, appointment scheduling, and basic EHR — was delivered in 7 months. The e-prescription system with pharmacy network integration and the insurance claim processing module added another 4 months. HIPAA compliance certification and independent security audits were conducted in parallel with the final development phase. The platform began onboarding doctors approximately 11 months after project start.
What results has the MedPoint telemedicine platform achieved?
MedPoint facilitated over 80,000 video consultations in its first year with an average patient satisfaction rating of 4.7 out of 5. More than 1,200 doctors across 15 specialties are active on the platform. Average wait time from booking to consultation dropped from 3 days (in-person) to 4 hours. The e-prescription system integrates with a network of 2,000+ pharmacies. The platform maintained full HIPAA compliance through two independent security audits.
Can a similar telemedicine platform be adapted for my healthcare organization?
Yes. The MedPoint architecture is modular — video consultations, EHR, e-prescriptions, and insurance processing are independent modules that can be deployed based on your needs. We can adapt the platform to your regulatory environment (HIPAA, GDPR, or local health data regulations), integrate with your existing hospital information systems, and customize clinical workflows for your specific specialties. The platform supports white-label deployment under your organization's branding.
