What is Headless CMS?
Headless CMS is a content management system without a coupled frontend, delivering data via API for display on any device or platform.
How Headless CMS Works
A traditional CMS (WordPress, Drupal) combines content management and display in a single system. A headless CMS separates these functions: content is stored and managed in an admin panel, and delivered via API (REST or GraphQL) for display on a website, in a mobile app, chatbot, or any other channel. “Headless” literally means without a head — without a coupled presentation layer.
Advantages of the Approach
Headless CMS provides several key advantages. First, omnichannel delivery: one set of content is used on the website, in the app, and on smart devices. Second, technology freedom: the frontend can be built on React, Vue, Astro, or any other framework. Third, performance: static sites built on headless CMS load instantly. Fourth, security: the public site is not directly connected to the CMS, reducing the attack surface.
Popular Solutions
Among headless CMS options: Strapi (open-source, self-hosted), Sanity (real-time editing, cloud-hosted), Contentful (enterprise-grade), Directus (open-source, works on top of an existing database), Payload CMS (TypeScript-native). The choice depends on the project scale, customization requirements, and budget.
Webparadox’s Approach
We use headless CMS in projects where content needs to be available across multiple channels or where maximum frontend performance is required. For corporate websites, we often combine Astro (static generation) with Strapi or Sanity for content management. For e-commerce, we take a headless approach to the catalog with a separate CMS for marketing pages.
